Rio Tinto describes autonomous haulage trucks managed through supervisory and central control systems. Vehicles follow defined GPS routes while the system monitors position, direction and speed. Its AutoHaul programme also applies automation to iron-ore rail transport in the Pilbara.

The relevant unit of assessment is the haul cycle, including loading, travel, dumping and waiting. A truck’s ability to navigate does not resolve a congested loading point or an unavailable destination.

Map one controlled route and its interactions before proposing automation. Establish communications, exception handling and operating boundaries with the mine and OEM. Use site data to evaluate the complete cycle; global deployments are references rather than guaranteed results for another operation.
